I've been a Benny fan since I first saw him on television in the 50s. As an adult I have collected his radio shows on both cassette and CDs.

I am in any Jack Benny events this year. Anyone got any lead? Rob

What a wonderful website and links for Mr Jack Benny! We both enjoyed the site and my best recall of Mr Benny skits, was on the Lucille Ball show... he plays himself and so "Witty" with his social security number: "0" so he says! on the show!

Jack's shows were and still are the absolute funniest. Unlike other comedians who used "topical humor"---Mr. B and company managed to keep their shows fresh, irreverent and basically 'dateless!' They are such a wonderful part of radio history and radio programming.

Jack Benny did a funny sketch with Marilyn Monroe in 1954. Has anyone else read the transcript for this? It's good!

I listen to the shows every Saturday night on KNX/1070, and have rediscovered how dry and subtle Jack's humor was, along with his perfectly-cast supporting staff. I vaguely remember the TV show from the early 60's, but those Radio shows make for the fastest half-hour of each week.

LL:  To what page?

As a fan of classic comedy (I prefer not to use the words "old-time", as truly great comedy never gets old), I was ecstatic when I came across this site. I, too, am 39 years old, and like my grandmother and Mr. Benny, refuse to budge another inch. I used to listen to the Benny program on WAAM in Ann Arbor MI, my hometown. They played his prgoram, along with Burns & Allen, and Edgar Bergan & Charlie McCarthy. They made working in a warehouse bearable. It is good to see that there are people out there who still appreciate what good comedy is, and are willing to preserve it. We are all too rapidly losing those who have a first-hand connection with it. I was saddened to read of the passing of Susan Marx, Harpo's wife, just a few days before Christmas. Laura, whether you know it or not, no matter what you do at your day job, you are truly a first-rate historian!! Thank you for your dedication.

My favorite Jack Benny movie is TO BE OR NOT TO BE, mainly because it is very funny, but also because it has the added bonus of co-starring CAROLE LOMBARD: she was amazing! I also like THE HORN BLOWS AT MIDNIGHT, which a lot of critics (and from what I've read, Jack himself) dismiss. I found it very funny. And Eddie "Rochester" Anderson has some great moments in BUCK BENNY RIDES AGAIN. I also loved Jack's appearances on THE TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JOHNNY CARSON. What are other fans' favorite Jack Benny movies???

I JUST WENT BACK AND LOOKED AT SOME OF THE ENTRIES IN THE GUEST BOOK. i SAW DANA ROSNER'S AND i JUST WANTED TO ADD MY TWO CENTS WORTH. i TOO MISS JOHNNY CARSON A LOT. HE WAS AN AMERICAN ORIGINAL, AND NONE OF THE CURRENT TALK SHOW HOSTS CAN HOLD A CANDLE TO HIM! i LIKE HIM BECAUSE HE AND JACK BENNY WERE GOOD FRIENDS, AND REALLY APPRECIATED EACH OTHER'S COMEDY STYLES. JOHNNY HAS A NICE WEBSITE WHIC H PEOPLE CAN VISIT: www.johnnycarson.com, AND HE HAS MOST OF HIS OLD SHOWS AVAILABLE FOR SALE! I BOUGHT ONE FROM 1976 THAT I WAS ON PLAYING "STUMP THE BAND" WITH JOHNNY & ED & DOC...THAT WAS FUN!!! ALSO, i AM SORRY I JUST FOUND OUT ABOUT THE CLUB. I WOULD HAVE LOVED TO GO TO FOREVER 39, BUT I CAN'T AT THIS LATE DATE. WILL THIS BE AN ANNUAL EVENT?

LL:  Per your comments about Johnny Carson, I was in touch with him yesterday to discuss the possibility of his involvement in 39 Forever.  While he is not able to make the event, he did wish us the all the best with it.

I've had a lot of people ask if 39 Forever is going to be an annual event, and the answer is no.  We're putting all our efforts into making 39 Forever the biggest and best Jack Benny celebration it can be...truly a once-in-a-lifetime event. After all, you can only induct Jack into the National Comedy Hall of Fame once!  There may be smaller, more informal gatherings in the future, but 39 Forever is the one not to miss.

HELLO! I just discovered the IJBFC today, have signed up to join the club, nad have ordered the newsletter! I am a huge fan of Jack Benny. I have several books, lots of 8 X 10 photos, and videos of his movies that are currently commercially available. I am 50 years old. I remember sitting with my dad and watching Jack...he was my father's absolute favorite, and I developed my love for Jack and his comedy because of my dad. I really miss him...there was no one else like him, and there will never be anyone else like him ever again.

Gisele Mackenzie! What a thrill it will be to meet her. I go way back in my appreciation of her vocal talents. I miss Johnny Carson terribly. He was hilarious. I loved his guest spots with children (especially Drew Barrymore), animals, as well as the skit as the mind reader wearing the large puffy pink hat (I forgot the character's name). His opening monologue and wonderful variety of guests were terrific. I used to laugh so hard that I cried. Ed McMahon was the perfect right-hand man for him. I can't think of any one particular show that I liked the best, but certainly his final show featuring Bette Middler and Robin Williams was fantastic. I wish that Johnny had never felt the need to end his wonderful shows, but I guess he had accomplished enough in this phase of his career. I hope he is doing well. Dana.

1) Check with the folks on our Tape Trading List (see Programs - Tape Trading List)
2)  Post a request to our Forum (see Forum - Bulletin Board)...you'll see someone recently asked for Buck Benny
3)  Check Ebay.  Copies of the movies come up now and again there.
Good luck!

I expressed this story to Eddie Carroll at breakfast one morning. I spent the afternoon around the pool at the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas at the age of 14 in a great conversaion about radio with Jack Benny. He was the headliner there and came out to the pool and ask if the lounge chair next to me was taken. Those were the days of Vegas. It was the summer before I was to begin High School.

What made Jack Benny so great was that he was not afraid of being made fun of by other cast members. The supporting cast was a perfect match for Jack. Even Don Wilson the announcer could be very funny by the way he delivered his lines...and could go on about Mel Blanc forever and the many characters he played on the show but him announcing the train to Anaheim, Asuza and Cucamonga was classic OTR. Just bought a 9 CD set of Jack Benny shows and am anxiously looking forward to hearing them.

LL:  Actually...you might be surprised how many do.  I've had a large number of people sign up in the past 6-9 months and self-identify that they are between the ages of 20 and 35.  I know we have some members as young as 10 or 12.  I myself am 33.  But apropos of the signature below, sometimes it takes someone already familiar with the shows to be able to "enlighten" someone who wasn't there.  So remember, you can share the wealth!

I don't suppose we will ever return to the days when young people and adults alike had the privilege of listening to old radio shows like that of Jack Benney. The list of old radio shows is very very long. Young people today do not realize this. Our yesterday audio entertainment was made up of a huge variety of comedy, drama, etc. It was all exceptionally entertaining, especially compared to what is available today. If this generation knew what they missed by being born after that entertainment era they would demand a rerun of almost everything that was available before their time. They would also wonder why it disappeared from radio. We who are older know and it is a sad story and sad for the children of today. Let's hope that we can recover these times by replaying them today or recreating that kind of entertainment for today's and future generations. Can it happen again?

Long time member of the club and lifetime fan of Jack and the Gang. I have most of his radio shows on cassettes and often play them to give me a positive boost. No one, but no one, well maybe Seinfeld, gives me as much a laughter boost as Jack and the Gang. I have heard these shows a zillion times and still they, like Seibfeld, provoke prodigious amounts of laughter.

I was born in 1951 and from the time I was 3 years old I was watching thr Jack Benny TV Show. I loved this man as he was a genious as a comedian. I would drop my baseball mitt on the ground to run home to watch an episode of his show. He was simply the best. Now at age 50 I recently started downloading his old radio shows from Win Mx. Those shows were just as funny as his TV shows. I wonder if he was a smoker since his sponser was Lucky Strike? There will never be another Jack Benny and that is sad but yet good in a way as this man needs to be remember for all eternity!

We have been fortunate to have it this week on WLIW New York, along with Burns&Allen. We are taping the episodes, on for a few days in a mini-marathon. It is fitting that the IJBFC keeps the memory of this great comedian and American alive. Every fan should see the Jack Benny exhibit here in Chicago at the Museum of Broadcast Communications in the cultural center downtown at Michigan ve and Randolph Sts. During February Chuck Shaden devotes the entire month on his radio show 'Those were the days' on WDCB 90.9 FM from 1 P.M. to 5 P.M. almost entirely to Jack Benny. If someone was to want copies of shows he has an extensive collection. Chucks email is 'twtdchuck@aol.com'. You can listen to him over the internet on Saturday afternoons at www.wdcb.com. They stream the show in Media player or Real audio. 39 year olds every where on the planet can laugh along. Also collections of Jack Benny programs are available from many sources, one I know of is Metro Golden Memories here in Chicago. They will ship anything anywhere and may have Jack's movies also. It's wonderful site and we miss Jack and his gang very much.

With apologies to Jack's best friend, George Burns was NOT "God" -- but Jack just MIGHT have been! (At least in a non-religious sense!) I was born in late 1956, which, at this writing, makes me... oh... 39 years old, seven times running! (One has to steal from the best, ya know!) I've been a fan of Jack's since my youth, initially through Tonight Show appearances and his late 1960s TV specials (anybody recall "Jack Benny's Bag?"), but it wasn't until I started listening to his radio shows on cassette in the 1980s that I began to understand what a master the man really was! I was (and am) a big Johnny Carson fan since early childhood as well, and it wasn't until I was an adult that I realized how much Carson's humor, style, and timing owed to Benny. May your organization last 39 years (in other words, forever!)!

Great tribute to Jack Benny; fantastic Web site! I'm 47, and can still fondly recall how I loved watching The Jack Benny Program on TV with my parents in the early-1960s...Something about his humor struck me, and I always continued to never miss a TV show he was on over the years, whether it was a Special on NBC or a guest spot on "The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson", or some other program. One of our TV stations in Los Angeles in the early-1970s or late-'60s also showed re-runs of the Benny Program often, and I watched those over and over again, they were so funny and well done...I love the one where Jack did a spoof of how the Beverly Hills Police Department operates. Then, later, I learned more about his radio shows, and what he was famous for before TV! Wow, I simply love Jack Benny, and cried when he died in 1974... But, I'm so happy that he is still remembered today by not only us older fans, but a new generation of fans who have discovered his timeless, comic genius. Also, I'm happy that I grew up in Anaheim and lived there from 1965-85...I see that there is a site on Anaheim history and someone has written a nice article about "Jack Benny's Anaheim, and how that city became connected with Jack's radio and TV shows over the years, and a story or two about Jack's visits to Anaheim, expecially one in 1947 when the town was still quite a small agricultural community in Orange County. He is my favorite performer/comdeican from the old days of radio and TV, because his shows were and are still so consistently funny and entertaining. Jim Hilliker Monterey, CA

Great site!! It is such a shame that there are no contemporary comedians that even attempt to approach comedy in such a dignified manner as Jack did....where are all the "next" Bennys, Hopes, Burns, Durantes, Knotts..etc? My name is Edmund Marco and it's a pleasure to sign your guest book. I work for an advertising agency in London. Our agency represents direct marketing companies that are involved in the marketing of products as seen on TV in England. Most of the infomercial products come from the U.S. but then again we export our talents as well. My brother has appeared in infomercials in the U.S. advertising various products. I think it's hilarious that English people respond so well to American products while Americans tend to respond well to sales people who have an English accent!

I've been commissioned to write the history of the Orpheum Theatre in Vancouver, B.C. The theatre will be 75 in November. Jack Benny first appeared in Vancouver in the 1920s at an earlier Orpheum, and I believe appeared in the present-day Orpheum in 1928 . . . with Sadie Marks, later Mary Livingstone, sitting in the front row and heckling him. I'd be delighted if anyone had SPECIFIC dates Jack appeared in Vancouver in the 1920s. I have specific dates for his latter appearances, when he played to help raise money to save the theatre. (This was in the 1970s.) But earlier dates would be *much* appreciated by this writer! Thanks. Chuck Davis derlang@uniserve.com

As house announcer at the National Orange Show in San Bernardino,in the year Jack died,Jack B., producer Bernie Scheppers and I whiled away part of the time between the matinee and evening show chatting in Bernie's office. Mostly we listened to JB reminisce and it was great! He was so proud that on his last tour of Great Britain, "with Mary and suitcase after suitcase of her gowns," the theater in Dublin charged the highest ticket prices of its history. Also, he was so solicitous of her well being that that he placed a call to his home (wouldn't let us leave the room), made sure she was okay and reminded her, "You're having dinner tonight at (so-in-so's) home. Be sure to call them and tell them you need a ride. No, don't call a cab! They'll pick you up. After my show here, I'm scheduled to make an appearance at that big hotel at LAX, so I'll be home about midnight" After his death I did a Jack Benny tribute for the San Bernardino Sun. One of the humblest persons I ever met. Thanks for letting me share..Chuck

I would love to find the whereabouts of Douglas Croft. Does anybody know where he is? You might recall, he played in a number of movies in the 40's, but I'm particularly interested in his role as the bratty Raymond in George Washington Slept Here. I know he was born in 1929, and his real last name is Wheatcroft.

Great site. I was about 8 years old in the 1960s when I discovered Jack Benny daily reruns. Growing up with the 3 Stooges and cartoon humor, I discovered what REALLY FUNNY was. In November, 1974 I was supposed to see Jack Benny in person at a live performance in Dallas. I feared the worst when it was cancelled. His death a few weeks later was like the loss of a close friend. And it WAS.

My name is Norma Stevens. I am the widow of Larry Stevens who sang as a regular cast member of the Jack Benny Show for two years as a replacment singer for Dennis Day during Dennis' time in the Armed Services during WWII. Larry passed away in April 2000 but before his death, he made several appearances on the East Coast for OTR. Two years before his death, he made a singing comeback at The Cinegrill in the The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. Larry followed this performance by making a CD of many of his favorite songs, some of which he had sung on The Jack Benny Show. His death occurred before his CD could be distributed. If anyone is interested, it is a beautiful album and can be obtained by e-mailing me at SongsbyL@aol.com His voice was as beautiful, if not more beautiful at the age of 77 as it was when he sang on the show in 1944-46. You will absolutely love his CD.

31 year old fan. i love the history of comedy. the late 30's to the late 50's to me were the purist and the most sophisticated era of comedy. from the marx bros., to the honeymooners even bing crosby. i am almost enveous of people who grew up during this time. from a distance it feels like it was a huge norman rockwell painting. mr. benny and his comedical circle are a once in a life time occurance. my generation will look back on the seinfeld's and the letterman's of this era(i happen to be huge fans of both). however today's artists simply do not compare. long live jack benny!!!!

I'm 55. Jack Benny became my favorite comedian when I first saw him on TV in the early 50's. I was also fortunate enough to see him perform in person on three different occasions, and after each show I was able to go backstage and meet him. He was warm, kind, and very generous with his time. He is still my favorite commedian, and he always will be. I'm grateful that so much has been preserved, but I still miss him. I get over to L.A. ocassionally, and I always stop by Hillside Memorial Park to "pay my respects."

On most days I listen to tapes of old radio shows during my commute by train to and from NYC. On days when I'm feeling stressed out, depressed or just plain tired, I always listen to a Jack Benny show. Those shows have an almost magical life enhancing quality. The great jazz drummer Art Blakey once said that music should seek to wash away the dust of life, I think Benny's programs have the same effect.

Jack Benny was my idol and mentor. I had the privledge of interviewing Jack for my book "Great Comedians Talk About Comedy." After that meeting we saw each other often during my years as a stand-up comedian. I developed my act doing self-deprecating humor as a result of Jack's influence. That interview has been preserved on tape and will soon be available from Laugh.com.

Personally, Jack Benny has made me laugh for years, and I thank the stars (please excuse the pun) that a good portion of his radio and television shows were preserved. To show you how much brilliance and star power he had, every Sunday night his radio show attracted the equivalent of an Academy Awards audience and a Super Bowl audience combined! He is the true personification of a 'superstar'.

I was a friend of the Late George Burns for many years. I also worked for George on several ocassions. Jack was very dear to him. The stories of George making Jack laugh are legendary. Irving Fein, George's manager and Jack's manager and friend for almost thirty years, I am still in contact with. Today's "comedians" could take lessons from the Masters. Well............that's it.

I have really enjoyed getting to know the radio comedy of Jack Benny via the Net, inspiring me to buy Joan Benny's book (which is wonderful, I have re-read it many times) and also the other bios of Jack. From everything I can gather about him he must have been a decent human being, and that in addition to his great humor, led me to dedicate my first comedy music album to him. Nothing on the album is really connected to anything Benny, but he has factored into the overall humor and I think that's important - so it was with pleasure and respect that I dedicated the CD to Jack Benny. Good morning! Nice website. I look forward to seeing how it develops. Who is the "webmaster" for your website anyhow? Very best wishes, Roger Fossum

Laura, I'm glad to hear from you. When I got the "other" IJBFC newsletter I assumed it was with your approval. I hope you can restart the real club soon.

Would like to have your newsletter, etc. I love Jack Benny's humor, timing, and am interested in the Fan Club. Thanks.

I'm the biggest Jack Benny Fan there is! I'm glad to have come across this site. How do I join your club?

Glad to that you are going to "pick-up" the operation of IJBFC again. I joined many years ago and had assumed that the organization had just fallen apart. Looking forward to official contact about status of club.

Hi Laura; Glad that you are back. I was a member of the IJBFC when you ran it and when Mr. Riffle took it over. Then it suddenly stopped. So, I naturally thought it was closed. Then when I thought it had been resurected again, I joined. Now my question is how do I rejoin the 'original' IJBFC? -Ray-

I joined the "newly rejuvenated" club thinking it was a legitimate continuation of your club. It is unfortunate that there is controversy about the continuation of the club. I hope it can be resolved on the basis of misunderstanding and miscommunication. However I don't know what is going on. I enjoyed your materials and tapes during the early 1990s and I' m glad you wish to continue the club Nik Kierniesky

Glad to hear you're alive and well -- we've all missed you since you went into semi-retirement. No one knows the Jack Benny stuff like you. Have you been back to Indiana lately? [Wasn't it Fort Wayne?] In fairness to the two gentlemen, though, I'm sure they thought, as I did, that you had simply lost interest and retired. I would have had absolutely no idea how to get in touch with you and maybe they didn't either. (I don't recall that you ever even told us old club members your married name.) You are of course absolutely right to protect your copyright. However, I hope the sudden (re-)emergence of two clubs doesn't cause a fight that sends us back to what's been for all practical purposes true since 1997, namely no club.
