Rent the movie "The Celluloid Closet" and you can see how gay/effeminate characters were portrayed in film back to the turn of the century. One of my favorite movie actors is Edward Everett Horton, who made a specialty of playing such a role (and had in his contract that he would never have to kiss a woman onscreen...although that must have been added after he was in "Top Hat").
Bringing it back to Jack, there's a short called "Taxi Tangles" about Jack wooing a woman in the cab next to him in New York traffic. While Jack plies her with his charms, the taxi drivers exchange comments at least once or twice. The taxi driver of Jack's cab is played in the "sissy" fashion.
