: : I have heard the song "The Thing" by Phil Harris several times. In fact, I have a recording of it. What I would like to know is, if this is a proper forum to ask this, what were the words omitted from the song when one hears feet stomping? I am not one likes to swear. but did Harris leave out the words G-- D--- to appease the censors and public, or was it simply a gimmick? Thank you.
: I wasn't born when Phil's "The Thing" record was first released, but from what I've heard and read, the hand-clapping and foot-stomping sound effects were an intentional gimmick, and not meant to censor any swear words.
: Apparently when the song was released, it was a BIG favorite of bar jukeboxes. The song would play and the bar patrons would clap and stomp along with the record while they drank...I'm sure that that made Phil very proud!
I always thought that the sound was more like someone beating a bass drum... and yes it was DEFINITELY a gimmick... I met this song thanks to my desire to hear the "Grass Reek" episode, and when you hear the show that was broadcast the week following... they play up both the "Grass Reek" bit and also mention "The Thing" in the "Murder at the Racquet Club" sketch
