: The author of a new Sammy Davis Jr. biography was on a radio talk show tonight. I called the show and asked about Jack's tour that included Gisele and Sammy in about '52. The author replied that Jack was a big fan of Sammy's. I don't know if the tour is specifically mentioned in the book. The book is called "In Black And White" by author Wil Haygood.
I heard about this book, but I didn't know it had been published. In 1953 before his accident, I escorted Sammy in his camel hair topcoat and several cameras hanging around his neck to what he said was his first football game; I had to explain the game to him. We talked about Jack and he had some kind remarks. After he passed away, the author of a book about him was on the radio discussing Sammy and his notable history. I tried to call in to tell him my story, but could not get thru to the host.
Sammy @ that time was a young vibrant man, crazy about cameras as he kept shooting pics, and he thought I was a coat rack as he asked me to hold his heavy coat - the weather that afternoon became very hot especially in the rowdy Cal men's rooting section. Boy, did he see things you didn't normally see in a rooting section. He understood the old phrase: "Boys will be boys." It was indeed a pleasure to have met and spent some time w/him.
