: And speaking of comedy writers, have you heard about the reputation of Al Boasberg? George Burns often said that Al Boasberg was a terrible writer of "fresh" material, but he was a superb script "doctor". Comedians have often said that if you locked Boasberg in a room with a typewriter and a stack of blank paper, after a few days the paper would still be blank (or filled with unfunny gags)...but if you locked him in a room with a lame, unfunny script that SOMEBODY ELSE wrote, Boasberg could "punch it up" and make it HILARIOUS!
Yepper. Jack said something along the lines of, "I wouldn't pay Al Boasberg ten cents to write a script for me, but I would [and did] pay him $1,500 a week to punch up an existing script!"
