: 1) Was there anybody Jack wanted to appear on his show, and couldn't get them on?
Clark Gable. He didn't feel comfortable on radio, and hearing him do a skit on one of the benefit shows, I don't blame him.
2) Was there anybody who wanted to be on Jack's program, but he refused to have?
Groucho Marx. Groucho had so criticized one of the scripts that Jack said (basically) "to heck with him". Then Groucho later wanted to know why he hadn't been on the program, and was told. After that, Groucho appeared and stuck to the script.
And another strange connection between these two...allegedly Margaret Mitchell wanted Groucho Marx to play Rhett Butler in the movie of "Gone With the Wind"! Just the thought of that shot down the bannister at the party that ends in a smiling Gable, and substituting an eyebrow-wiggling Groucho, makes me laugh.
