The ceremony for the 1943 Oscars, aka the Casablanca Oscars, was held in 1944, and Jack hosted the braodcast portion, which, for the first time, was also broadcast on shortwave overseas.
The ceremony at that time was quite brief, airtime being valuable. So there were some short acceptance speeches, but extremely short.
Not much comedy, either, unless you count Jack asking everyone who came to the microphone, "Have, uh, you seen George Washington Slept Here?"
: : According to imdb.com, Jack hosted both the 1944 and the 1947 Academy Awards. The 1944 show states that he hosted the "overseas broadcast". Probably something to do with the war? He must have been a tough act to follow in 1947 - no host was selected for 1948!
: Thanks, Bud. I knew about the 1947 hosting stint, because on Jack's regular program which was on a few nights after the Oscar ceremony, one of the "head honchos" of the Academy of Arts and Sciences drops by the Benny program....and accusingly informs Jack that there's an Oscar missing!
