: : This is a genuine request: What is a smudge pot? (As in, "I Married A Smudge Pot")

: : I wonder what the OED would have to say "Invented by Arthur Smudge" or something...

: I believe this was a type of warming device for protecting fruits and vegetables during cold spells in S. California.I supppose in context with the Benny show was either its appearance or odor.I could be wrong, however.
I've heard this in an episode entitle "The Plumber"
which features Gladys Zabisco. At the beginning of
the episode, Jack and Gladys go into a drug store to
get lunch. Jack orders a 15 cent sardine sandwich
(what else?) and Mel Blanc's character asks him
if Jack wants the imported sardines or the domestic?
Mel tells him that the imported sardines come from
Denmark, Sweden and Norway.....the domestic ones
come from Anaheim, Azooza, and Kookamunga. Then
Mel says something to the effect that the domestic
sardines have to be "warmed up in a smudge pot!".
