The tragic events of the past few days have reminded me of the excellent work that Jack Benny, Fibber McGee & Molly and many other radio performers used to do in the event of war, natural disasters, etc. At the close of many programs, people like Jack, the Jordans, Harold "Great Gildersleeve" Peary, Eddie Cantor and others would take off their clown make-up for a few minutes and seriously talk about the importance of national pride, hard work and sacrifice in dealing with national hardships. These words were inspiring and in many cases probably very helpful to many listeners in coping with terrible situations. I think that it's very sad that we don't have entertainers today who can offer this same type of sincere inspiration to the American public. Those radio performers who DID were very special people.
