I think his illness in 1943 occurred in Chicago, and it was an attack of pancreatitis.
to Richard, no, he never owned a chain of theatres.
to Bob R., I don't know for sure, but yes, I think he had a romance with Giselle M. I don't how long it lasted, but they were friends til he died. I don't know who the character on the show (who knocked on the door) was.
