: Jack, stories to the contrary, was actually a talented ad-libber, as evidenced by his ability to quickly respond to the occasional fluff made by a member of his cast.
: And Jack ad-libbed more with Allen because Allen ad-libbed a lot. He had no choice, really. But I doubt his rejoinders were scripted, and he most assuredly was never threatened. He and Allen were longtime comedy pros before they ever "feuded" on the radio, and both knew how to quip, and get a big laugh, within the context of whatever gags they were firing off.
Fred Allen seemed to bring out the best ad-libbing abilities of many personalities who appeared with him on radio.
Have you ever heard George Jessel guest on Fred's program? (He guested with Fred many times). The two of them would ad-lib like crazy, and it was always hilarious...and the Allen shows with Jessel almost ALWAYS ran over and had to be cut off the air by the network.
As far as Jack Benny goes, he really COULD ad-lib...and I love to hear him completely lose it with hearty laughter whenever Fred lets a good ad-lib fly!
