Yes, the "Rodney Dangerfield" of the Benny show was supposed to be a Cowboy movie star...and the name IS very funny-sounding for that type of a character! A VERY interesting side-note: When A&E's "Biography" program ran the bio of Rodney Dangerfield (a.k.a. Jack Roy), much was made of Dangerfield's real-life WORSHIP of Jack Benny. In fact, Rodney's whole "No Respect" bit developed from Jack Benny getting "no respect" in his radio and TV shows. Think about it...NOBODY respected Jack...not his cast, not store clerks, waiters/waitresses or telephone operators...not even his employee Rochester! The Benny character, and it's complete lack of respect from the outside world, served as a great inspiration to Rodney when Dangerfield was developing his own comedy character. The "Biography" program also tells of the time Jack visited Rodney backstage after one of Rodney's performances. During this visit Jack complimented Rodney on developing such a wonderful comedy character and style. Years later Rodney said in interviews that Jack's backstage visit and comments were THE greatest moment of his personal and professional life!
