: It should be noted that Jack and Phil DID still work together, even after Phil left the radio series as a cast regular.
: Phil made several appearances on Jack's TV show, even as late as the early 1970's when he guested on Jack's "Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Jack Benny But Were Afraid To Ask" special....They revived the bit where Phil tries to sing "That's What I Like About The South" and Jack keeps stopping him and asking him to explain every line of the song....and even after all those years the routine STILL worked and was STILL very funny!
: As talented as Bob Crosby was, I really feel that Jack's radio show lost something when Phil left. The series was STILL hysterically funny, but Phil's comedy and personality were sorely missed.
And the increasing focus on the TV show didn't
help any. In spite of many classic shows during
the Bob Crosby period, it's hard not to notice
the real lack of energy after Phil left. All
the reruns of old shows reduced the load on
the writers, I suppose, but Bob just didn't have
much to contribute beside the music and sounding
like Bing. On refelection, Phil never actually
**did** much but play a particular character
(Dennis, by contrast did a lot of things including
some great voices), but it was a great character,
and seemed to stretch and challenge Jack's
"Sorely missed" is exactly on target.
Yours in Benny,
