Excellent analysis. But I would submit one adjustment:
Jack Carson and Fred Letterman. Johnny Carson was openly influenced by Jack, and had more of his pacing and style. I really haven't watched the show since Carson left, but Leno's style makes me think more of the genre of comedians that play against brick-and-mortar backdrops. Carson and Letterman were both working late night for about 10 years, and I think may reflect an even better comparison.
With the notation that Letterman's "cranky old curmudgeon" image seems to have been developed much more in the last 10 years. He was doing some of that in the 80s (remember "GE sucks!"?), but I think he was still unsure enough to have played it more safe.
