In 1967, I happened upon The Jack Eigen radio
show on WMAQ in Chicago. My husband was working
3rd shift. When my husband came home, told him
about a guy on the radio that sounded just like
him. My husband is from Brooklyn. Tried to find the program the next night to find out the
man's name. Told my husband his name is Jack Eigan. My husband told me. "he used to broadcast
like a Hollywood reporter in New York." We both
listened to him and became regular listeners. He
broadcast from The Merchandise Mart in Chicago
and talked about living nearby. He had a regular
cab pick him up every night to go back to his
apartment and his wife and daughter. On weekends, he would broadcast from the Palmer House. He had a poodle dog too and would say
that even though he was a big star, his wife would make him take out the garbage and walk the
dog when he got home. He was great. Remember
when Wendel Corey was on the show. Jack asked
him how he'd been able to remain married for so
long. Jack always said I've been married my whole life. When asked is he ever thought of divorce, Wendel said, "divorce, no. Murder. yes." Jack would give people hope when he said
Whistler's mother didn't start painting until she
was 72. He also lied alot and said Barry Fitzgerald didn't begin acting until he was 67.
He lost his job when WMAQ unfortunately changed
format. He and his wife both deceased now, moved
to Florida where their daughter was attending
college. Believe she is still alive. Jack could
just talk on and on about how his mother led a
full life and never traveled more than 40 blocks
from home. He also said that he'd always wanted
to have Lana Turner on his show, and when it was
set up, she was so drunk, he couldn't put her on.
He'd flirt with the ladies by saying I'm not a
cheating husband, but if I were, it would be with
you. He didn't have a whole lot of names on, but
he'd make even ordinary people interesting.
Think there should be a website specifically for
Jack Eigan with pictures and biography. He was
one great entertainer. Mike Nichols and Elaine May of Second City fame did a skit called Jack Ego, satarizing his show. Jack loved it. He also loved to go to the horse track and brought
his audience many stories about the track. He
was 69 when he died of lung cancer.
