Obscure Reference

Usually Jack's shows aren't "current events" driven, but there is an episode where Jack gets a phone call and we hear:

Jack: Hello? Yes, this is Jack Benny...What?...Well!!....Well, I suppose I could... but of course I'll have to make some arrangements about my picture and radio commitments... Yes I certainly will think it over... and it was nice of you to consider me... Thanks, Thanks very much...Goodbye

Mary: Who was that?

Jack: They want me to be governor of Georgia

Some people (like me,) may not get this reference, but I have found out the story. It has to do with the time for about 3 months in early 1947 when 3 different people claimed to be the governor of GA. It happened when the governor-elect died before being sworn in.
