He sends me

Postby scottp » Sun May 23, 2004 9:30 am

The circa 1946 show with the takeoff on "It's a Wonderful Life" has a couple of little old ladies talking about Jack. One says, "He really SENDS me... and if I were 20 years younger, I'd GO!" which gets a big laugh.
I've heard another where the telephone operators are talking about Jack, and Bea Benaderet says something about how much she admires him, to which the other one replies, "Me... he does not send."
How long did they play around with this slang term? Anyone want to cite a favorite example? (I'll try to keep listening to the shows on K-SURF, but when they're on I'm usually driving around, somewhere between the station's two weak transmitters, and I miss chunks here and there when I get too close to major power lines!)

Well, of course, the great Sam Cooke had a huge hit with "You Send Me." So I have to assume that the expression was pretty familiar to folks in the 1940s and 50s.

Those segments with the old ladies were pretty funny. As far as they were concerned, Jack was Brad Pitt, George Clooney and Matthew McConaughey all rolled into one.

And they were very much the forerunners of the Jack Benny Fan Club, Pasadena Chapter ladies.

I recall a joke from the approximate era, I think it was from Jack's show, or maybe Jack's guest appearance on Burns & Allen. I forget most of the details, for the sake of this post I'll use George's singing voice.

Gracie: How about George's singing, doesn't it just SEND you?
Jack: Yeah, but not far enough!
