What's your favorite commercial?

Postby DerekVOF » Tue Aug 01, 2006 6:26 pm

I know it sounds weird, but I have to admit that I often really enjoy the commercials on the Jack Benny radio show -- especially the wonderful musical commercials by the Sportsmen (Hmmmmmmmmmmm!)

I'm kind of partial to the "Christmas Elevator" song (1948-12-19 -- "Gee that funny... Four guys running one elevator..." "Second Floor! Christmas toys for girls and boys, sweaters shirts and ties,..."). But I think "The Syncopated Clock" (1955-04-17) and "The Thing" (1950-12-03) are close seconds for me...

So, what's your favorite commercial?
"Ship off the starboard bow!" "What kind is she?" "She's a Spanish Galleon!" "A galleon?" "Good! That's a quart for each of us!"

For the Sportsmen, it's gotta be "Sabre Dance". I didn't know human beings could sing so fast (except for L.A. Speed Riggs).

My favorite (and boy, is it tough to pick just ONE!) is from the 1947 Thanksgiving show where Jack plays his violin and The Sportsmen sing "The Poet And Peasant Overture". The studio audience sounds like they're really having a good time with that one!

The song that started me on my obsession of all things Sportsmen Quartet was "The Thing"...

Other favorites -

"I Don't Care If The Sun Don't Shine" with Vivian Blaine
"Blue Danube Waltz" where the Sportsmen started dancing with each other and the audience explodes with laughter
"Oh"
"Yule Train"
"Wilhelmina" with Phil
"Flight of the Bumblebee" with Bob Garsen's extraordinary whistling
"You Must Have Been A Beautiful Baby" with Don, Frank Sinatra and Mel Blanc

Ohhhhh, who am I foolin'? I LOVE 'EM ALL!!!! :)

Bill Days said that they would challenge Mahlon Merrick to put in as many LSMFT's into the songs as possible.

One of my favorites is Mel Blanc as Tweety Bird singing "I tawt I taw a Wucky Stwike"

That's something that would never happen these days!

Occasionally "Doctor Demento" plays the original Mel Blanc song on his radio show, so I was familiar with it long before I heard the LSMFT version. So it resounds in that "inside joke" section of my brain, making it that much more enjoyable.

How about non-Sportsman? One of the ones that sticks in my mind is a Lucky Strike spot when Jack is buying cigarettes from a clerk played by Arthur Q. Bryan, who uses his Elmer Fudd voice. The audience just howls.
