The late Fred Allen, 18 years ago, was judge for a unique contest.
Allen, at the time, had a fun feud with Jack Benny. The contest was to select the person who could best give reasons “Why I Hate Jack Benny."
The second-place winner of that contest was Chris Doherty, who was attending law school on the GI Bill. His wife had been working as a beauty operator but had to give up her job.
The reason for Mrs. Doherty leaving her employment was impending motherhood.
Doherty collected $1,500 from Benny's sponsors as his second prize.
The money paid for all the expenses attendant to the birth of his daughter, Charla, and six months rent on their apartment.
IN 1955 Doherty moved to Southern California and currently is practicing law in Los Angeles.
Daughter Charla decided to become an actress and did.
She's appeared in several television shows and a movie, "Take Her, She's Mine."
Recently, her agent sent her on a casting call to audition for a role on another television program.
She got the role, that of Don Wilson's son's girlfriend on The Jack Benny Program.
When she reported for rehearsal, she brought with a photostat copy her father had made of his prize-winning check.
“I think Mr. Benny looked sort of nostalgic when he saw it,” she said.
