Special Performances

I was wondering how it worked when Jack and the gang did special performances such as at Army Bases or benefits in San Francisco. Did they still do two performances for the East and West Coast or were they just recorded and replayed? I know that later the programs were transcribed but what about earlier like in the late 30's early 40's?
