Is there anybody alive from the show?

Postby grittys457 » Sat Dec 19, 2009 7:40 pm

I know that obviously all the regulars and writers are gone. Are there any regular guests or characters on the show that are still kicking? As far as celebs on or mentioned on the radio show up to where I've listened, Lauren Bacall is alive as well as Jack mentioning Olivia de Haivilland and Mickey Rooney.

Wow, just checking on wikipedia and there is a woman alive in New Hampshire who was born only 15 months after Jack was.

I don't know, just always found it fun to play the number and age game and see what connections there are to the past.

Jay Meyer passed away earlier this year leaving Mr. Sperzel as the surviving member.

Wow, Irving Fein is still alive. 98 years old. Was he ever on the show or just Jack's manager?

How about Ed, the vault guard? No, that couldn't be. He was about 200 years old when the show was on!
"Hey, Jackson, does Fred Allen always talk through his nose?"

"Yes, Phil. He's the only comedian who tells 'em and smells 'em at the same time!"

Stan Freberg is still alive and recently told a funny anecdote about his first rehearsal on the Jack Benny show as a teenager when he was on Shokus Radio last week.

The whole interview is pretty well the same stuff he tells Gerald Nachman in his book. Only Nachman doesn't interrupt Freberg's stories or endlessly fawn over him with a screechy voice.

I note that Laura has dutifully reported in her book that Freberg played a camel in a January 1944 show. It seems remarkable an unknown teenager would be plucked out of nowhere to do a speciality voice, especially when Mel Blanc was around.

My grandmother is still alive. I know that she wasn't a regular but it was one of the high points in her life. She appeared on the Jack Benny Hour. You know, the one with Bob Hope and the Beach Boys. She was the first flight attendant. The one that said "coffee". Hahaha. She told me a funny story about the other girls that were trying out for the "coffee, tea, or milk" parts. She said that a few of them had accidentally said "coffee tea or me" during the rehearsal and they were very afraid that they might accidentally blurt out what would have been extremely scandalous back in 1962.
