Did Jack originate this general phrase? It is associated with him, but you see it everywhere.

I imagine it comes from old vaudeville billings. I found a 1918 Chicago Tribune ad using it to describe Geraldine Farrar in "The Turn of the Wheel".

Newspaper stories prior to 1920 use the term to describe Dustin Farnum, Ethel Barrymore, Kay Francis and Nazimova.
