The return of the Maxwell after WWII

Postby kbbl » Wed Dec 30, 2009 4:23 pm

I know the Maxwell was "donated" to raise awareness of the scrap metal drives during WWII. What I didn't notice was specifically when it returned. Was it just eased back into the show, or was there a specific episode explaining the Maxwell's return.

It seems to have been eased back in. In one 1948 episode, the Colmans were riding with Jack and reference is made to the donation of the Maxwell to the war effort; Ronnie asks what kind of a car is the one they are now riding in, and the answer is never given (but it sounds like the Maxwell). In another episode (I think) Rochester refers to the current car as a Rolls-Canardly. It rolls down one hill and can 'ardly get up the next one. Eventually, the Max was just back, if I recall correctly.

I think it's Mr Kissel who mentions the Rolls-Canardly. Other than that, I can't say much to what the original poster was asking about.

The Rolls-Canardly joke also appears in an Alan Young Show that I want to say is from 1947. (Alan is competing for a girl's attention vs. Jim Backus, who plays a proto-Thurston Howell rich fellow.)

I remember another car being mentioned in the interim. Rochester phoned Jack with a wild tale about having a collision with a train. When Jack asks the name of the train Rochester answers 'Now it's the Atchison Topeka and Chevrolet!" I believe the Maxwell was so popular with the fans that they quietly resurrected it.
"Hey, Jackson, does Fred Allen always talk through his nose?"

"Yes, Phil. He's the only comedian who tells 'em and smells 'em at the same time!"

Thanks. Being a Mel Blanc fan, I couldn't see myself missing that.

And I agree, the Maxwell, besides being a fan favorite, was perfect for Jack's character.

Brad is pretty close. Benita asks if it's the Maxwell, and Jack (or Roch) says it's not. But then later the Maxwell reappears. I tracked it in detail in Volume 2 of 39 Forever...anyone want to pull their copy and give a summary? I would, but I'm just getting ready to go back to my "paying job" after a very busy vacation! :)

Not really on-topic, but the other day I listened to a 1940 Al Pearce show, where a man is coughing and sputtering, and Al says something like, "That fellow has a bad case of Jack Benny's Maxwell."
(That series included several performers from the Benny show, as discussed in other threads.)
