Pickle in the Middle

Postby Tate » Sun Mar 21, 2010 7:59 am

I was surfing around YouTube and saw a listing for "Frankie Laine - I may Be Wrong/ Pickle In The Middle."

The info for it stated, "This was the first Mercury Recording for Frankie Laine. He did the "B" side of the recording with the band from Billy Bergs'. The "A" side was a skit by a radio Comic called "Pickle In The Middle With Mustard On Top". This takes place in a Fair and Frankie can be heard as a Barker."

It's the Pickle in the Middle song. Although it was the "A" side of the record, this clip has it playing after Frankie Laine's song. The songs are accompained by still photos of Frankie Laine. But there is one photo of Mr Kitzel.

Being a fan of both Frankie Laine and Mr. Kitzel, I am surprised that I never heard this record before. I believe this song was written by one of Jack's writers, and was inspired by Mr. Kitzel's chant as the hot dog salesman. It was performed at least once on the Benny program by Larry Stevens, who I believe also released a record of it. Mr. Kitzel was so funny. Sometimes he breaks Jack up with the mere sound of his voice.
"Hey, Jackson, does Fred Allen always talk through his nose?"

"Yes, Phil. He's the only comedian who tells 'em and smells 'em at the same time!"
