New shows coming out of the vault? Any update?

Postby jbennyfan39 » Tue Apr 20, 2010 11:33 am

Any news about when the new shows are coming out of the "vault"? What has to happen for that to occur?

Fair question. I have been trying to get a chance to watch the copies and make sure they're all OK before distributing them, and with Eddie's passing and starting a new job, I just haven't had a chance.

This weekend looks like the first fairly clear time for me in over a month, so let me see how many I can get through. Tough job, but someone has to do it!

What's available?

Postby Bigdude » Mon May 17, 2010 7:09 pm

With all that's been written lately about CBS vaults and the JB Fan Club, as well as the recent announcement that some new shows will be added to the IJBFC Video Library (“12 of these shows are new, never-before available programs and 2 of these new programs are in the "sealed" CBS holdings”), it makes me wonder, is there a list of what is available/still exists?

I’ve got a listing of an episode guide that shows 258 shows were broadcast, but I know some of them are lost. The IJBFC Video Library has 92 episodes available via the 12 Special Collections. Is that all that's available?

And to clarify further, I'm meaning episodes that are available via syndication, DVD, club trades, etc.

Strictly talking TV shows here not, radio.

Thanks!

Basically, everything exists somewhere except for three shows. I have already gone through the scripts of those three shows to create the summaries for Volume 3. But it's heartbreaking that one of them has Sammy Davis Jr. as the guest. I'd like to think that some 16mm of these shows will turn up in some collection some day, but for now, it's not in any of the places that I know has copies of the shows. Keep hoping!

Can you PM me which show that is? :)

I have a partial list of the shows I know they appear on from the "new" shows. Thank God for the Tobaccodocuments website.

Thanks 8)

Were there really 258 shows broadcast? I am just starting my collection, and I would appreciate some guidance on how to get them, with a limited budget. Out of 258 shows, there are only 92 of them in the IJBFC library? What is the best source to get the other ones (for free would be nice, but at least affordably?)

I was thinking...is the person you're referring to a certain former member of the group? :D

If so, I have the show. I bought a couple of years ago from Shokus.

Excellent! Now it's only a matter of time before the one with Ronald Colman gets added to the library, right, right, right? *waits patiently*

Yes, 'tis. The show is 12/18/55. Shokus has this? I'm surprised...didn't think it was in circulation!

And there were actually 261 shows broadcast, but three of them appear to be "lost" as best as I can tell. I believe we have the most extensive collection of Benny television programs available in one place, and I have needed to go to various archives in order to see shows that aren't currently in circulation.

Only three lost? For the golden age of television, that's really good! It's staggering to think about how many shows from the first 20 years or so of television are gone forever.

Recently I read a book about Steve Allen and the Tonight Show. Apparently most of those episodes (like most of the first ten years or so of Carson) were discarded by the network years ago. I'm assuming Jack Paar has suffered a similar fate as well. Pity, because I'm sure there were innumerable classic moments that are now just a vague memory.
