Here's a story from Oct. 22, 1934

Jack Benny Slips, Broadcasts 'Damn'
The only comedian to receve a medal for distinguished radio service, Jack Benny, wanted to say "darn" last night—and he did by way of correction—after his tongue had slipped and caused him to say "that's damn good." But he got the medal, just the same.
The incident unnerved Jack, which was made obvious by his repeated clearing of his throat through the remainder of the program.
Later in the evening Eddie Cantor used the word "skunk" in one of his attempts at being funny, while ribbing Dave Rubinoff.

Do you think Jack wanted to shrink and disappear after that accident?

I just listened to it. So innocent sounding.

I don't see why Cantor's "skunk" is so bad... and if the writer is so uninpressed with Cantor's attempts to be funny, why doesn't he say "THE GUY WHO PRETENDS TO BE Dave Rubinoff"?
