Lucky Strike Trivia

from: _Ish Kabibble the autobiography of Merwyn Bogue_ (with Gladys

Bogue Reilly) Lousiana State University Press 1989: "...Once the war

was well into the period when supplies were tight, the color of the

American Tobacco Company's package of Lucky Strike cigarettes was

changed from green and red to white and red. The green dye used

to make the packages was no longer available; it was being used

to dye GI uniforms and other army equipment. An order came down

from George Washington Hill that our radio commercials were to

include the phrase "Lucky Strike green has gone to war."

And in fact this was not true...it was all just a patriotic marketing ploy.

Apparently Lucky Strike green got killed in the war, since it never came home, and the packages are still white and red.

And if anyone out there has a copy of a print ad with the "Lucky Strike green has gone to war" slogan, please contact me!

Apparently, Chromium, used to make the green packages was on the Government's critical list and Lucky had to change their colours.
