Help me identify a specific show please

Postby BIGZIPZ » Mon Aug 30, 2010 10:09 am

There is an episode of the JB Program which I am desperate to recall and identify.

My mind is vague but Jack was doing a bit where he was concerned that a younger comedian was going to outshine him on the show or something like that.

There was a song sung by this young comedian which was like a Russian style song in a Russian accent which was really elaborate and very very good.

Anyone have any idea what I am talking about?

Sounds like the episode where Jack, Mary and Dennis went to Danny Kaye's new movie. Jack is lukewarm on the movie until he runs into Danny. Zany madcap highjinx ensue. Then Danny does the Russian number. I don't have 39F with me but will try to look it up tonight. Somebody will probably beat me to it...
That's funny, Norman Krasna loved that joke.

I agree that it's gotta be the one with Danny Kaye. 4-28-46, The Kid From Brooklyn.

Hey there, I thought that might be the one but it wasn't the one I was looking for. The song I remember was much more intense and lasted a lot longer.

I hope I am not imagining the whole thing. Lol. Maybe the only way I will find it is If I go back to the beginning and listen to them all.

Knowing my luck I will be remembering the wrong program entirely.

I just had a brain wave. Maybe it happened on an episode of Command Performance!

Sorry for wasting your time :D

Found it :D :D

Command Performance 42-03-01 (001) Eddie Cantor.mp3

I expect my memory was muddling up Jack Benny Program memories and Command performance memories into one.

The Russian angle reminds me of the time Jack tried to replace the Sportsmen and he auditioned these Russian operatic singers and they were getting real emotional during their number

Jack: Why do they have to do that? ... Boys, don't cry! Look, fellas, you don't have to cry! ... That's not what I want!

Jack should have shot the sobbing Russians with a Johnny Ray Gun. (He would have to set the gun to eleven because tenors are tough to kill.)
After the last falling body "ba-dump-bump", the announcer in Jack's dream would intone... "The crying Russians have descended the podium"

Now to find that episode of Command Performance...

I just listened to several "tenors are hard to kill" shows last week, and repeated the phrase without thinking to a guy at church lamenting some mistake the choir had make. It was only after I got home that I realized what a totally out-of-left-field remark that must have been to someone who does not listen to a lot of Jack Benny.
I hope that nothing happens to one of our tenors or I will be a prime suspect!
