411019 radio show questions

Postby DavidinBerkeley » Thu Nov 21, 2013 1:28 pm

I have 3 questions this time.

I'll put in this preface in case it helps.

***

The cast is going back to LA from New York, by train.

One of these jokes involves sleeping in a train berth, which I'm not completely familiar with. Just in case it is a joke that "paid off" from earlier info, I'm noting the following:

Early on, people are commenting about Jack being cheap about paying for berths: Mary must share hers with a stranger, Don Wilson and his wife must share one, even though Don is quite large; and Dennis must share one with Jack. Jack snored all night, keeping Dennis awake.

***

1. The men are all using the washroom in the train.

Jack: Hand me my robe, Don. It's that green one with "seven up" on the back.

[extended laugh, even from the cast]

***
Now I know that 7-Up's bottles were green, so I'm wondering if this is related.

The closest I can guess is a boxer who wears a company logo on the back of his robe, or a hotel that puts their logo on their robes, but I can't connect it to Jack.

***

2. Everyone is going to bed.

Jack: Well, here's our berth, Dennis. Crawl in.

Dennis: Nothin' doin'! I get the outside tonight!

JB: You had the outside last night. Don't you remember? You fell out 4 times. Now get in there.

Mary: Quiet, we're trying to sleep!

JB: Get in there, kid, and stop making trouble.

DD: Okay. Gee whiz, Mr. Benny, there's no room here.

JB: Put the oranges in the hammock. [A reference to an earlier joke about Jack's oranges.]

DD: Boy, I hope I can sleep tonight.

JB: You'll sleep. I know I will. I'm tired. Are you comfy, Dennis?

DD: Yeah, I'm all right.

JB: (getting sleepy) I'll be good to get home again. [referring to a child he met on the train earlier, who was going to Hollywood to work for Bob Hope] You know that kid might not be a bad gag man at that. Hope he shows up for breakfast.

Boy , it feels good to stretch out here.

DD: Darn it!

[pause]

Pardon me, Mr. Benny.

JB: There you go, crawling over me AGAIN!

[long laugh and applause]

***

I can guess that 2 in a berth must sleep side-by-side, so since Dennis got in first, he would have to crawl over Jack to get out. And I'm guessing that the "Darn it!" means something particular, which I won't put here in case it prevents another idea from popping into people's heads.

Even with all that, I still can't understand quite why Jack's line got such a big laugh. I'm going to listen again in case it is a payoff for an earlier joke, but I'd still like to hear if anyone has ideas.

***
3. Jack starts to snore, like he did on previous nights.

DD: Here we go again!

Jack starts to alternate snoring with whistles on the exhale.

DD: Oh, boy, whistles this time.

More snoring and whistling.

DD: Well, I guess I'd better start counting sheep.

One.... two.... three.... four... No, that's a police dog.

[big laugh from audience].

Here are my interpretations, for whatever they're worth:

1. Yep, Jack being cheap by using a corporate giveaway or stolen robe - but it is odd, the gag would have been more straightforward if the robe said "Hilton" or "Acme Plaza" or some other hotel. Not sure why "Seven-up" (from back in the day when it contained lithium!)

2. Dennis had to pee.

3. Dennis is such a nut he can't imagine just sheep, there's other random stuff in there...

Thank you SS, for your input.

1. I wish I could get at what this one is, too.

2. That was my guess, too. It took me a while to figure it out.

3. I can't see this being the answer, since it's Dennis.

It would fit Mr. Billingsley, who was given to surreal-esque comments.

But Dennis I don't consider to be a nut.
