Jack's Sponsors

Has anyone else found themselves buying any of Jack's Sponsors products? Jell-o, Grape Nut or Grape Nut Flakes, or Lucky Strikes?
I hate Jell-o with a passion so I didn't get that, but I have gotten Grape Nuts, and Unless you look on E-bay I don't think you can get Luckys...

Thief!! You stole my idea for a post!! ;)

I think I have seen Lucky Strikes in the recent past, but I haven't looked lately. I THINK they're still around.

Luckies are still around but they have a different demographic these days! Basically aimed at street thug types (they have no filters, etc). I remember seeing billboards advertising Luckies in some rough parts of Oakland, CA when I lived out west a couple of years ago.

I always joked that Grape Nuts were a lot like having a breakfast of kitty litter. They're one of those things you either love or loathe. Do they still make the flakes? Those might be better.

I have a fondness for Jell-O, but I have this sneaking suspicion that if you eat too much of it you might need to go visit Eddie Cantor's program and find some Sal Hepatica.

Jack's Sponsors

So funny that you should post that question. About two years ago, I started walking for exercise. I usually will listen to two or three old radio programs during each walk. I was listening to a series of Jello shows, and found that I was picking up Jello while at the grocery store. Then I got into the Grape Nut Flakes shows, and, sure enough, I ended up getting some of that cereal while at the store. Thankfully the Lucky Strike shows have not had the same impact on me. 8)

I haven't had any Canada Dry Ginger Ale since I was a kid, but I do drive a Chevy, although a little more modern than those 1932 or '33 models from Jack's early shows. I LOVE Grape Nuts, but I've never eaten Grape Nuts Flakes. However, Grape Nuts is my standard breakfast cereal.

I rarely eat Jell-o anymore, but I've always liked it (no matter what it's made from--those of you who saw the PBS documentary on the early history of Chicago know where I'm coming from there). I quit smoking over 26 years ago (Wow! That's over half a lifetime!), and when I did smoke, it wasn't Luckies.

I, too, listen to recordings of Jack's shows while I walk for exercise, and I buy Jell-O. I want to keep Jack on the air, I guess!

Hey, I'm drinking a Canada Dry ginger ale right now (diet - working on losing a bit of 'winter coat'), and it's good stuff. The old commercials that work best for me are the Carnation evaporated milk ones from the Burns & Allen TV show. I watch those and I'm convinced that stuff can do anything! Then I buy a can and it sits on my shelf since I never seem to have wacky insurance salesmen, detectives, etc. dropping over for silver tea & coffee service. Nor do I seem to make a lot of chiffon cakes from scratch.

Now, the true test of Benny sponsor loyalty: Who boycotts Fred Allen's sponsors' products?

But at least you don't have a closet full of hats, either.

Here's a quandary...Texaco sponsored Fred Allen in the 1940s, then Jack was their spokesperson in the late 60s-early 70s. To buy or not to buy?

No problem here in Illinois. Texaco, which once proudly boasted that it was the only brand sold in all 50 states, pulled out of this area several years ago. You can't boycott something you can't get.

This thread kidn of brings up an interesting topic (at least for me), but which really has no place here, so I won't even start it except to mention that it made me curious. There were a lot of shows on OTR sponsored by a lot of products. When I hear ads on old shows, I start to wonder how many of those products are no longer manufactured. Again, not really part of this thread, and I don't know where it would be appropriate on the boards here, but just a thought.

Depends if you're smoking a Lucky Strike at the time of purchase!

My brother-in-law gave me a package of Jello, some grape nuts flakes, ginger ale, a matchbox car with General Tires, and a vintage lucky strike poster/advertisement that he picked up on Ebay for my 39th birthday a couple of years ago. Very cool!
