A Jack Benny reference on "Pebbles and Bamm Bamm"?

Postby likewow » Sat May 10, 2008 9:35 am

Hi! I just watched an episode of the 1970s Flintstones spinoff and was shocked to hear a reference to Jack Benny's radio show. Bamm Bamm was about to enjoy a hot dog and said, "Just the way I like it: Pickle in the middle and the mustard on top!" Did the Benny show character Mr. Kitzle actually introduce this phrase or did it come earlier?

Thanks :D

Someone will correct me, but I thought it was a creation of one of the Benny writers (John Tackaberry maybe) who heard a variation at a sports event in Texas.

"The Flintstones" should not be taken as an accurate depiction of pre-historic times...

(Yeah, I'm sure you knew that!)

It's easy to imagine why a Flintstones spinoff would embed such a tribute to Jack Benny since Mel Blanc was Barney Rubble and Bea Benaderet was Betty Rubble. And Alan Reed (Fred Flintstone himself) played bit parts on the Benny show didn't he?
That's funny, Norman Krasna loved that joke.

I just got that Pebbles & Bamm-Bamm DVD set, and have been enjoying it. I heard the "pickle in the middle" dialogue too, and smiled.

I also picked up on two other interesting references:

In one episode, Pebbles is desperately trying to find the junk dealer she accidentally gave a box containing a secret gas formula. One junk yard she approaches has a sign over the door that says, "THROUGH THESE PORTALS PASS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL JUNK IN THE WORLD." That's a spin on the famous neon sign at Earl Carroll's on Sunset and Vine in Hollywood ( later the MOULIN ROUGE ) , which flashed, "THROUGH THESE PORTALS PASS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL GIRLS IN THE WORLD". Here's a photo of the sign:

In another episode, Fred makes a reference to Pebbles "keeping it ( long pause ) all in the family". Sally Struthers was the voice of Pebbles, and was also starring at that same time as Gloria Stivic in the huge hit nighttime show, "ALL IN THE FAMILY"!

Well, I won't correct you since you're right... :)
