What is the real deal about Phil and Bob?

What is the real deal with Phil leaving the show? Was he making so much that getting rid of him would save the production that much? I know that radio budgets were getting slimmer in the 50's but why get rid of such a popular star? Was there a rift between Phil and Jack as part of or as a result of this? Was Bob Crosby's salary that much smaller than Phil's that he could be afforded instead? When was Bob's last broadcast with Jack?

You may have already done this, but i believe there has already been a bit of discussion on this topic...i would suggest checking even going back into the archived forum for all the comments.

My sorry-no-answer-here take is that it may have been one of the reasons you noted, or more murky reasons, none-of-the-above or a combination of several.
