Irish Tribute to Dennis Day

Postby Roman » Wed Jan 18, 2006 10:57 am

Interesting biographical tribute to Eugene "Dennis Day" McNulty from Ireland's County Mayo. http://towns.mayo-ireland.ie/WebX?14@41 ... 0@.ee8825b

The article has many interesting details about Dennis which I had never known (for example that he had planned to be an attorney when he enrolled in Manhattan College). It also states that he had three children, not the nine or ten that are attributed to him in other biographies.

Worth reading if you want to learn more about Dennis Day.

I'd have to look it up in my interview, but I'm pretty sure Dennis himself told me he had nine (and they appeared in both the 20th anniversary special and on the cover of Christmas is for the Family).

Oops, sorry 'bout the giant white space. If LL wants to delete, I can repost a smaller pic.

Try again - "top middle" must have tried to take Jack's candy cane that year...

It occurred to me afterwards that the article mostly consisted of a review of a 1952 concert that Dennis gave in Ireland. It was difficult in reading the article to see where the 1952 review ended and the current tribute continued. The information about Dennis's children was probably a part of the 1952 review. I believe that Dennis got married in 1948 so, in 1952, Dennis may only have had three children.

I loved that bit on Jack's 20th Anniversary special. Jack runs into Dennis and his wife Peggy at the airport. Jack comments that he hasn't seen Dennis in years, and one by one, Dennis introduces Jack to each of his nine children. Jack just stands there staring at that large group of kids and finally says, "Well.....I WAS going to ask you what you've been doing, but never MIND!"
