Joseph Kearns's Wonderful Life?

Postby Jhammes » Wed May 10, 2006 8:56 am

Joseph Kearns is given credit as one of the angels (voice over only) in
"It's A Wonderful Life": actually, IMDB and Wikipedia credit him as giving an
"uncredited" voice over (?!?). I do recall one of the unseen angels is named "Joseph"; and
toward the end, Clarence, while wrestling with the policeman, even calls out for "Joseph" before disappearing. Very few still around from that movie, and I don't know if anyone has the answer, but was the name "Joseph" sort of an "in-joke" for the uncredited Joseph Kearns?
Jack was always good to him, and all his semi (and regular) regulars!

No, the unseen Joseph was voiced by Moroni Olsen who was an experienced Hollywood character actor. Olsen was in lots of movies in the 1930s and 40s but he's probably best remembered today for Joseph and for being the voice of Queen's mirror in Snow White (when I was a small kid, he scared me more than the Queen). Joseph Kearns, who I believe was rather new to Hollywood at the time, was the voice of the other unseen angel. I'm not sure if his angel had a name.

Of course, a far more substantial Jack Benny connection to It's a Wonderful Life is Nick the Bartender played by that man of so many accomplishments, Sheldon Leonard. That scene in which Jimmy Stewart and Clarence visit Nick's Bar in the alternate universe is Sheldon Leonard at his New York tough talking best. It's kind of neat that a man who made his name for playing so many gangsters and hoods made his ultimate reputation as one of television's pioneering producers - but then maybe playing those tough guy roles was the perfect training for navigating through the world of Hollywood.
