In search of Hy Averback

Postby LLeff » Thu Dec 22, 2005 5:38 pm

Hi all,

I'm looking for an audio sample of Hy Averback's voice. I know he was on several other shows, and I'm trying to figure out if he's playing certain roles on the Benny show. Please contact me directly at president@jackbenny.org. Thanks!

According to the Internet Movie Database (IMDB), Averback was the voice of the loudspeaker announcer on the TV version of M*A*S*H*.

I believe the loudspeaker voice on M*A*S*H is Jerry Houser, who some people may remember from one of the Brady Bunch sequels ("The Brady Brides") as Marcia's husband, Wally (why do I know this?!?...ugh!)

Hy Averback, directed a bunch of the M*A*S*H episodes. The one Jack Benny radio show that comes immediately to mind with his voice (and I don't have the date) is Jack and Mary are in the Maxwell and the announcer (Hy) says, "Next we have the Sportsmen Quartet. We were supposed to have The Ink Spots but we felt sorry for the Sportsmen." Jack replies, "They feel sorry for everyone who works for me." Hy says, "The Sportsmen will sing 'Oh'".

I believe he was also Jack Paar's announcer on his radio show and he was involved somehow with Paar's TV shows (Director, perhaps?).

Hope this helps.

I thought of another appearance of Hy Averback on the radio show as an announcer. It is paraphrased: Jack turns on the radio and hears Averback mention that a Professor or Scientist has discovered a solution to the smog problem in Los Angeles: He moved to Colorado. He then introduces the Sportsmen singing, "Eh, Cumpari!".

IIRC I might have heard Hy Averback on a Bob Hope show from the late '40s not long ago. So you might want to try to find some of those to get a sample of his voice.

As mentioned he has a big part in the Jack Paar Show. Do you want me to post a couple?

In the words of Dennis Day, "Yes, please!"
