Radioyesteryear / Radio Spirits?

Postby Mike » Fri Jun 25, 2004 4:18 pm

A few years ago I bought some great radio shows from Radioyesteryear Then I understand the company was sold to Radio Spirits. I tried to get one of the printouts of another category of shows from Spirits as I had done previously with Yesteryear, and it took a VERY long time for the printout to arrive. So I sort of gave up on ordering anything from Spirits. It seemed they just don't have it "together," except for maybe the prepackaged stuff which I can find anywhere. Has that situation changed? Has anybody had better luck with the Radio Spirits company? Mike

Printouts? huh?...do you mean catalogs?I havn't had a problem getting these mailed to me, and their internet site is user-friendly.

i agree they (mostly) have alot of readily available stuff (ie-many other sources for alot of it), that is mostly pre-packaged (thus making it harder to get specific shows and you can end up with duplicates-tho they now have a few more smaller sets) and is relatively expensive.

i have bought a few things over the past few years, and the quality of cassettes and CD's has been consistently VERY good (i don't yet collect mp-3's), ....also i've kinda assumed they are a bit more responsible wrt "copyholder" rights-tho i've read contrary opinions about that... including that they bought out other "mainstream" suppliers to end up with a bit of a monopoly on less "informed" (casual?) OTR buyers.

This is not an endorsement, just a statement of fact...I know that Radio Spirits has an agreement with the Benny estate to distribute the shows. So from that respect, they could be considered "more responsible" than other distributors.

Yesteryear used to make computerized printouts of all the shows they had with specific performers, say, for example Don Ameche, or all the shows they had of a certain show, like Dragnet, or whatever. Then you could choose which or all of the shows that you wanted from that list and they would customize your order. It was a good system. I don't know if Radio Spirits is still doing this. My previous experience turned me off to that company. But if anybody has had better experiences with the old system of customized orders, I would like to know about it. I might be tempted to give it another try.

My recommendataion is to check with the 'sponsors' at http://old-time.com where you will find many dealers that can supply individual shows at very reasonable prices. Radio Spirits (now owned by Audio Book Club if memory serves) has always catered IMHO to periodic customers, not collectors. This idea comes from their pricing structure (at least double of OTR dealers) and the huge packages.
