Jack Benny mentioned on the Proud Family

Postby Jack Benny » Tue Jan 18, 2005 8:41 am

The Proud Family cartoon did a tribute episode to Matin Luther King. In it the daughter goes back in time to 1955 to see how far race relations have come. At one point the family is watching TV in 1955 and one of the Family members comments on how funny that Jack Benny is. I assume the writers are Benny fans because a Lucy reference would have made more sense to a greater section of the viewing audience.

The Proud Family

Jack Benny was the only entertainer during the 1950's (outside of Ed Sullivan), with an African-American cast member, who was never humiliated, ridiculed, or scorned. Very different from "Amos n Andy", "Beulah", or any character Willie Best was forced to play. No doubt this was appreciated in the African American (I would like to think all American) communities during the 1950's. So, it would make sense for the Proud family to be enjoying Jack Benny a little more than Lucy.
Ed Sullivan was never all that funny...well, at least not on purpose

I must point out one other such entertainer. Red Skelton often had Wonderful Smith as a guest, and he NEVER has him play anything that would be considered stereotypical. One might never even suspect that Mr. Smith was a minority.
