Jack in Ed McMahon's Book

Postby Brad from Georgia » Wed Oct 12, 2005 9:54 am

Just got back from the dentist's (where I did NOT say, "Sing, dentist") and whilst in the waiting room, I glanced at a magazine that had an excerpt from Ed McMahon's book about Johnny Carson. McMahon tells about a very young Johnny Carson, lying on the floor, covering his eyes with his hands, listening to Jack Benny. According to the book, on one of the occasions, Carson said to himself, "This is it. This is what I want to do. I want to make people laugh like that."

Nice little story.

That took me a minute before the groan set in!

I wonder if the full-length Ed McMahon book may have some more interesting stuff to say about Jack directly. Probably worth a browse just for the stuff on Johnny Carson alone.

Believe it or not, my dentist's last name is Day. So I literally have my teeth cleaned by Dentist Day.

In the "Truth Is Stranger Than Fiction" department, Dennis Day's real-life brother was a very successful and prominent Hollywood dentist who was married to Ann Blyth.

I forgot to mention that Dennis' brother's name was Dr. James McNulty. Dr. McNulty straightened the teeth and filled the cavities of some of Hollywood's biggest stars.

And now I know why she did those ads for Hostess snack cakes - to drum up business for her brother! (Or am I just thinking too much like Jack?)

Ed passed away, according to the news. It's a shame his final years were so stressful.
