Re-creation of the War of the Worlds broadcast.

Postby bboswell » Tue Oct 21, 2008 6:08 am

Hey everyone, I know this isn't related to Jack, but on Thursday October 30th I am directing a live re-enactment of the famous "War of the Worlds" broadcast. I'm going to be using a live orchestra and sound effects performers, just like it was done 70 years ago. It will be in front of a live audience and be simulcast on the local public radio station, which then streams the signal on its website http://www.bsu.edu/web/ipr/listenonline/listenpage.html (You have to have downloaded Real Player first.)

This is the famous broadcast that created panic when everyone thought that martians were invading earth. It was a simulated news broadcast and people thought it was the real thing. It caused a lot of new laws and regulations to be made in the broadcasting world.

If you happen to be in the Muncie, Indiana area on the 30th and you would like to watch an old-style radio drama or see how radio drama used to be created you'd love to be in the audience. Tickets are available at http://www.ticketmaster.com/event/05004139AA44527A?artistid=1261419&majorcatid=10005&minorcatid=0 Or just listen in to the broadcast on the radio or online.

If you are going to be in the coverage area of the radio station, here is a map showing where you can pick it up:

http://www.bsu.edu/ipr/aboutus/coverage.htm

When it's over, stop me and introduce yourself! I'll let you play with the sound effects! The airplane sound and the "heat ray" are some of my favorites!

I think I'll talk the Atlanta Radio Theatre into redoing "War of the Worlds." But I'll cast Jack Benny as Professor Peterson.....

Ha! that's great. Jack's friend from Calabasas can play Wilmuth, the owner of the farm!

Any other casting choices?

Dingdingdingding! WINNER!

Phil: Hiya, radio audience. Don't worry 'bout invaders from Mars, 'cause Harris is here, and he's the star!

Jack: Now cut that out!

Phil: Okay, okay. I'm here in the gigarantic observatory--

Jack: Read it right! Oh, I forgot....

Phil: Keep your shirt on! I'll get to you! I'm in the gi-gan-tic observatory with Professor Pooson, who has been observin' heavenly bodies--you old rascal, you.

Jack: These disturbances on Mars are possibly of volcanic origin.

Phil: Man, he reads this stuff with such a straight face!

Dennis: Professor Pooson! Professor Pooson!

Jack: Oh, hello, research assistant. What is it, kid?

Dennis: This just came on the wire for you.

Jack: What is it? A telegram?

Dennis: No....it's a pigeon.

(and so forth)
