The 39-cent stamp window might be pretty narrow!

Washington Post article today talking about the postage rate hike:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/co ... 00853.html

I seem to recall another story about this awhile back - the whole escrow and legislation kerfuffle is beyond my understanding :? , but it seems that the two-cent hike really is a temporary fix, and a larger increase will be necessary very soon - in fact, the rate probably would have skipped over "39" entirely were it not for this legislative snafu.

Particularly troubling for the Benny stamp campaign is the idea that another hike will start being considered as late as this spring (last paragraph). With the 2006 designs already finalized, it's going to be a tight squeeze!

The answer of course is to put Jack's profile on a coin rather than a stamp. I propose the Benny penny. No other coin would do Jack justice. And, after all, old Abe's been on the penny for a long time now and he could use a rest. Besides weren't he and Jack schoolchums?

I thought it was Washington.

I believe it was George W. -- the original "George W.", I mean -- who was Jack's boyhood pal; if I recall correctly, Jack voted for Lincoln.

How about a 39-cent coin? Quarters ain't worth what they used to be, and no one ever liked those fifty-cent pieces. Split the difference!
