TWTD: Jack Benny Month, Featuring Mel Blanc

Postby Maxwell » Wed Feb 01, 2006 6:36 pm

February is Jack Benny month on Chuck Schaden's "Those Were the Days" radio program, and this year will feature Mel Blanc, with and without Jack on radio (and in cartoons). TWTD is heard Satrudays from 1:00-5:00 p.m. CST on WDCB-FM in the Chicago area. The broadcast is streamed live at http://www.wdcb.org and can be heard for a week beginning the following Tuesday at Schaden's site: http://www.wdcb.org.

Here's the lineup:

This Saturday (Feb. 4):

Jack Benny Program (12/12/54): Jack is planning a visit to Palm Springs.
The Cisco Kid (1953): Mel plays Pancho's "cousin-in-law" Porfirio in "Murder at North San Juan."
GI Journal #79 (1/26/45) Mel appears with William Bendix, Arthur Treacher, Lena Romay, Jinx Falkenberg, Lt. Jimmy Grier, and the U.S. Coast Guard Band.
What's Up Mel: "Welcome to Termite Terrace." Part 1 of a 4-part feature on Mel's work for WB cartoons.
Burns & Allen Show (2/27/47): Mel as the Happy Postman in a follow-up show to B&A's 15th anniversary show.
Jack Benny Progran (5/23/48): The cast does their version of "The Egg and I."
Also: Short bits with Jack and Mel.

February 11:

Jack Benny Program (12/5/48): Mel as Prof. LeBlanc. Jack goes to the vault to pay him after a lesson.
Interview of Mel by Chuck Schaden, Part 1 (9/4/88): Mel talks about his book "That's Not All, Folks." Originally broadcast on WBBM-AM, Chicago.
Phil Harris-Alice Faye Program (4/2/50): Phil tells his daughters the story of the Easter Bunny. (I can only guess who Mel plays since the other guest is Arthur Q. Bryan.)
What's Up Mel? Part 2. "Man of a Thousand Voices"
Judy Canova Show (7/6/43): Judy returns home after a war-bond sales tour in Hollywood.
Jack Benny Program (9/25/49): Jack's third show of the 1949 season features Edgar Bergen and Charle McCarthy, Amos 'n' Andy, and Red Skelton who have also made the move with Jack to CBS and whose shows were set to debut that week.
Also: Short bits with Jack and Mel.

February 18:

Jack Benny Program (1/11/48): Jack is about to visit Denver for the March of Dimes. Features trips to the vault and to the railroad station.
Interview of Mel Blanc by Chuck Schaden, Part 2 (9/4/88): Includes phone calls from listeners. Originally broadcast on WBBM-AM, Chicago.
Cisco Kid (1953) Mel again is Pancho's "cousin-in-law" Porfirio in "Porfirio and the Bearded Lady."
What's Up Mel Part 3. "Mel Blanc Sings."
GI Journal #77 (1/12/45) Mel appears with Frank Sinatra, Fibber McGee and Molly, Ginger Rogers, Arthur Q. Bryan, Connie Haines, and the Les Paul Trio.
Jack Benny Program (10/23/49): Jack recuperates at home following a nasal operation.
Also: Short bits with Jack and Mel.

What's Up Mel? Part 4: "Tooning In."
Mel Blanc's Fixit Shop (10/15/46): Mel can't take his girlfriend to the postman's ball because his father has to entertain a member of the Zebra Lodge.
Jack Benny Program (1/23/49): "Rochester" opens the show because Jack and Don Wilson are in contract negotiations; Jack and Mary visit the dentist.
Also: short bits with Jack and Mel.
