Friends have videotaped To Be Or Not To Be, Buck Benny Rides Again, and George Washington Slept Here for me from AMC or TCM. They would be wonderful movies for release on DVD.

To this day I have not seen The Horn Blows At Midnight or any other of Jack's movies made after he became a radio star. A friend who loves Jack Benny has told me the movie is nowhere near as bad as Jack made it seem. IMDB reviews are generally kind to the movie, too.

I saw The Horn Blows at Midnight several years ago..While it was by no means a masterpiece it was amusing..rather pleasant..certainly not as bad as Jack (and his writers) made it out to be.

I also thought the Horn Blows at Midnight was a good, not great, movie. When I was a kid, Channel 5 in New York showed it every year on New Year's Eve and it was a treat for my brother and I to be able to stay up until after midnight to see the end of the movie.

On a couple of interviews I saw, Jack was very disparaging of The Horn Blows at Midnight. He said that he had misgivings when he read the script but decided, against his better judgment, to do the movie. While Jack wasn't very specific about why he disliked The Horn Blows at Midnight, I think that a clue may be found in a radio version of the movie he did a few years later. In the radio play, they eliminated the silly subplot of the two fallen angels who tried to stop Jack from blowing his horn. Instead, they inserted a sentimental storyline of a little immigrant girl who meets Jack and how this caused Jack to question the mission he was sent to do. I suspect, although I've never read this, that Jack found the story of an angel sent to destroy the world too black and disturbing, particularly as the movie was released during the slaughter of World War II. This is just a guess but it seems logical.
