Phil's Theme

Postby Yhtapmys » Tue May 15, 2007 3:05 am

I've never really thought a lot about the opening bridge music Phil Harris used on his radio show. But I was just listening to an internet station playing music from the 30s and they just played it. It's the first time I've heard the whole song. My music player says the song is called 'Rose Room.'

It wasn't Phil's version, it was by some band I didn't know.

"Rose Room"

'Rose Room', written by Harry Williams and Art Hickman, was recorded many, many times and was known as the theme song for Phil's band.

A personal favorite of mine was recorded in 1928 by 'The California Ramblers' with a vocal by Irving Kaufman.

Check out the website:

www.redhotjazz.com and type in "rose room" in the search field.

You will be able to listen to several interesting versions. There is even a version recorded in 1919 by Art Hickman and his Orchestra available on this site.

As an interesting sidelight (at least to me), the changes to Rose Room were used by Duke Ellington in his "In a Mellotone." Rose Room was a particular favorite of Benny Goodman, iirc.

Thanks, Clyde. It's been awhile since I've been on that site. I guess that the song was composed then Hickman added lyrics later.
