Trips to New York

I'm currently listening to The February of 1937 episodes (Jack's just about to play the Bee). I've noticed when Jack went to New York in the next episode, Phil stayed in Hollywood... (seems like Phil was always staying in Hollywood when the rest of the gang went East)... I'm wondering why?

I don't know the answer, but if I recall correctly, it wasn't just Phil but the whole band that didn't go. Perhaps it was cost. Perhaps it was the fact that the band had other engagements on some of the other six nights of the week that the show wasn't on.

Probably because he still has commitments at the Ambassador or wherever his band was playing.

Agreed. Most likely other commitments. Otherwise Phil would have come out and they would have engaged a "pick up orchestra" of local NY musicians.

Can anyone spot Jack or any of the gang? Did Rochester make it back on board? This gives me a perspective I didn't visualize in my mind when listening to them traveling on the Superchief and stopping in Albuquerque!

And what's quite appropriate is that it's in, of all places, Albuquerque. If you don't get it, listen to the very first appearance of Rochester in 1937.

The photo is a treasure, like so many by Jack Delano from that time.
During mid-1937, the Super Chief started using streamlined diesels similar to the one in the photo, but in 1936-37 it had a pair of "boxcabs":

The Super Chief was only once-a-week at that time, so that original pair of diesels was able to go back-and-forth, LA to Chicago to LA, except for when out for repair, leaving the train to steam power.
Albuquerque may have a Santa Fe steam engine running again in a few years; 2012 is the state centennial, and the state has taken over a railroad line for commuter use, so a big smoky whoop-de-doo is a possiblity...
The depot burned down in the 1990s.

These diesels were sometimes referred to as "The Twins" or "Mutt and Jeff" or "Amos 'n' Andy."
