I'd say no on the '48 Chevy, seeing as this photo was taken in 1942. And that's a clue!

A wild guess. It's being pushed, so your clue leads me to think Jack may be taking it either to a junkyard or a car dealer.

Darn close Max, but in 1942, where would all patriotic Americans take their heaps?

Ah, to scrap to produce a bomber that Jack would fly in a dream.

Yeah! In addition to it being a radio show plot (10-18-42, and a bit thereafter), Jack actually did some publicity for the scrap drives to offset the then-current steel shortage, including actually finding a real Maxwell, and doing the stunt of taking it in for scrap for newsreels.

We kinda forget that the Maxwell was a war casualty, and disappeared for a good while, until it would mysteriously resurface in the show much, much later (I think 1949 definitively, according to 39 Forever) without explanation.

Yeah, Steve, that pretty well gave it away. The war scrap drive seemed obvious but I thought the car was post-war. It's probably a '41 Chev; maybe a '40. Who are the women?

I don't know for sure, but my guess is the women (and the uniformed guard) are 20th Century Fox bit players, as Jack turns the Maxwell in at "the studio". In addition to the scrap drive publicity, this was -also- convenient PR to plug Jack's upcoming "Meanest Man in the World".

The men in the second shot, if anyone's interested, are Mr. Merrill Stubbs, Chief of the Automobile Graveyard Section, Conservation Division of the War Production Board (he'll have you know!) and Lessing Rosenwald, Chief of the Conservation Division, War Production Board.

Surely that's George Burns looking all Joker like, not Jack?

The hand's dark. Maybe it's Eddie Anderson.

And I would've gotten away with it if it wasn't for you meddling kids!

Not quite sure who the mask is supposed to be - my vaguely-educated guess is that Eddie's goofing on George Jessel, who was known as the perpetual master of ceremonies, rather than George Burns (who didn't really look like that in 1941). This is from an NBC dinner for Jack celebrating his 10-year radio anniversary (a little early).
