SOUPY SALES ?

Postby Mike » Sun Oct 25, 2009 3:26 am

did jack and soupy ever do any shows together? did jack ever get a pie in the face? about soupy, what i remember most about his show was when he used to say: "I DON'T GEEEEEEEEEEEET IT!" does anybody remember that line ? he used to say it a lot as i recall, and the way he said it (in a low voice i think) was so funny!

I was also a fan of Soupy Sales. Silly, adolescent, low comedy, but I still loved it. I have no memory of Jack and Soupy working together. Their comedy styles were like night and day, and I cannot imagine Mr. Benny taking any pastry in the kisser.
"Hey, Jackson, does Fred Allen always talk through his nose?"

"Yes, Phil. He's the only comedian who tells 'em and smells 'em at the same time!"

What I enjoyed about Soupy is there was no pretention about him and he never "tried" to be funny, even though it's such a temptation with some of his schtick.

I can't picture how he and Jack would mesh, either. I suspect Jack would have worked with vaudevillean friends from his old days if he wanted to do pie-in-face stuff.

A re-working of the 10/30/60 Jack Benny script (Milton Berle) probably would have worked fine, with Soupy Sales in Berle's role.
I remember Soupy mostly from the 1970's versions of "To Tell The Truth" and "What's My Line?" (the later daily version, not Daly version... that's a joke, son...). Over a decade later, Jack could have returned as mystery "guest".
Those are about the only ways I can picture them onstage together.

Soupy was a naturally funny guy. I watched his original show back in the 60s and there was a lot of ad libbing and some humor directed at the adult audience. There is a very funny outtake on one of the blooper collections when the crew had a naked stripper knock on his door. Of course the TV audience didn't see what Soupy saw, but his reaction was hilarious. Soupy was a member of the Friar's Club, but I don't know if he knew Jack or not.
