Jack Benny bound scripts on ebay

Postby bboswell » Tue Apr 19, 2005 8:43 am

I just happened upon this bound copy of Jack Benny Scripts from '36 to '40.

Yeowch! $3000 is a little salty for my blood. Heck, I haven't even got the scratch for 39 Forever!!

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 13349&rd=1

the auction claims to be from Milt Josefberg's own library, and it looks like there are some handwritten notes in the columns of the pages.

If someone here buys them, let me know so I can come over and touch the pages! ;)

Which is a little fishy since Josefsberg didn't start writing for Jack until 1942, though they might have been scripts used for reference. Interesting nonetheless.

Actually, I'd been in touch with this person for some time before they put them on Ebay. I'd said the same thing (Josefsberg started in 1943), but it sounds like the bound copies were used for referring back to previous gags, etc. It's long been my feeling that Ed Beloin stayed on a while to get the new group of writers up to speed on writing for the characters. So it's entirely possible that bound groups of scripts were probably shared as reference. Who knows... maybe Bill Morrow gave up his copies when he went into the military, and you'd be getting a volume from more than one of Jack's writers. But I can't assert that, just a fantasy.

So is this related to the volumes in the Thousand Oaks public library, which also claims to have a lot of Josefberg's papers and scripts?

Possibly. This fellow knew the Josefsberg family and got the volume directly from them.

Are copies of these scripts cheeper to get in some other fashion, Laura, or is buying these copying them for my own enjoyment and then re-selling the originals the only way I can get these scripts? I have all of the Lucky Strike scripts, but would love these as well. I just want reading copies like the lucky strikes are.

The pre-Lucky scripts really aren't out there much. You have to have permission from the estate to get copies from UCLA, and I don't know of another source for scripts like the recent Tobacco Documents page.

What's this? Is this a possible source for Jack's Lucky Strike scripts? Maybe I haven't been paying attention.

Yep, it's tobaccodocuments.org - Lots of Benny script PDFs, because, they are in fact, tobacco documents. You need to look under "American Tobacco" - it's not the most user-friendly site.

Now, once someone discovers the lethal health hazards of Jell-O and files some lawsuits, we're in business for the Jell-O scripts! (Just kidding, good folks at General Foods  ) Personally, I don't get that much of a kick out of reading them, though they are a curiosity. For me that old saw is right, Benny is a lot funnier in the delivery than on the page.

Wow, Thanks!! I had a glimmer of hope that they might have the Dec 3, 1950 show in the collection, but wouldn't you know it, that one is not there. (Frequent readers might remember my wondering what the punch line was supposed to be to the "Grass Reek" fluff.)

(Side note to "Jack Benny"... You say that you have a lot of Lucky Strike scripts? Is the 12/3/50 show among them? Love your show, by the way!)

True, but I also love to look at the original docs to see the handwritten notes and (as above) lines that didn't make the cut for one reason or another. Curiosity will probably kill this cat one day!

For example, I have an old script from the Fibber McGee show that, on the final page has a serious call for young women to become nurses. There is a line (with a line through it) that says:

"Remember, it will be you girls at the rear who will be really battling the enema"

The line has an asterik by it and the note at the bottom of the page says:

"Wendy: this will come out, naturally. --D.Q."

D.Q. is Don Quinn, writer of the show.

Lets see I have October 29, 1950 then the next one is... January 7, 1951! :( Oh man, I don't have that episode either. Rats! One thing you will find at that site is that quite a few files are labeled differently, so they are hard to find. I think I have found them all now, but it took a lot of creative searching. If I get ambitious I will list everything I have, then if someone found some other shows burried on that site they can tell us. In fact, I think I have aprogram that does that automitically, I'll be right back.

Thanks Mr. Benny!!

I was just perusing the tobbacco site and reading through the scripts. So, I see now that when they are marked "As Broadcast" that means someone actually went through and added every little thing that was added or deleted during the show!!!

I just read through the "Jack Benny and Bob Hope Double Date" episode. Holy Cow! They penciled in every ad lib Bob blurted out!!

Great link for that tobacco site; I was planning to download the scripts, but that have way to many to go through. I'll just hope the site is never taken down. :)
