Songs on the show

Postby bboswell » Tue May 24, 2005 1:44 pm

I know we all listen to Jack because he is one of the greatest comedians of all time, BUT...

Admit it, you've found yourself tapping your toes to "Christmas in Killarney" or some other song on the show.

What is your favorite song/songs that you have heard on Jack's show? Is there a story about it? (Perhaps a song you had heard years ago and had forgotten, or maybe it was the first time you heard a song and through it discovered a new favorite songwriter or genre...??)

Although personally I think Dennis can get a bit schmaltzy sometimes, he still blows me away with "Hey Brother, Pour the Wine" It was also interesting to then hear it in an early Simpson's episode where Marge gets drunk at Homer's company party!

I didn't discover these songs through the show, but I love hearing Dennis sing "Danny Boy". It's just perfectly suited to his Irish tenor, and is a real show-stopper.

I also was recently blown away by Dennis' rendition of "Vesti La Giubba" as a Lucky Strike commercial (with Don ostensibly at the piano...or at least seated at the piano). It gives Dennis a chance to exercise his operatic skill and really belt it out in a way that "I'll Take You Home Again, Kathleen" just doesn't.

One of my favorite Dennis Day numbers is "Almost Like Being In Love" from "Brigadoon". It's very upbeat and Dennis does a great job singing it. There are several episodes of Jack's radio show, and at least one TV episode, where Dennis sings it.

My other two favorites are catchy tunes from the 1938 season. Phil and his orchestra did a fine rendition of "Pocketful Of Dreams" from Bing Crosby's film "Sing You Sinners", and Mary sang "Says My Heart" from the film "Cocoanut Grove". While Mary wasn't the greatest singer in the world (I much prefer Gracie Allen's singing solos), the song itself is very enjoyable.

I have almost the exact opposite reaction to the music on the show!! Although I like the music of the 30's and 40's (I'm pretty familiar with the standard "Great American Songbook" tunes) I always find myself fast forwarding through Dennis's numbers. He has a fine voice, but the music selection is usually terrible, in my opinion.

Having said that, Dennis did a great rendition of "Old Buttermilk Sky" at the end of one episode, when I guess they had a couple extra minutes to kill. Another I remember liking was a very upbeat version of "Put another Nickel in the Nickelodeon."

I like Phil's numbers more, but the best by far are the song commercials by the Sportsmen's quartet -- some amazing vocal stuff there, and usually quite catchy tunes and witty adaptations.

I like when Dennis sings Clancy lowared the boom. And my other is Phil's "the thing."
You know that one:

While I was walking down the beach one bright and sunny day,
I saw a great big wooden box a-floating in the bay.
I pulled it in and opened it up and much to my surprise,
Ooh, I discovered a * * * right before my eyes.
Ooh, I discovered a * * * right before my eyes.

I picked it up and ran to town as happy as a king.
I took it to a guy I knew who'd buy 'most anything.
But this is what he hollered at me as I walked in his shop:
"Ooh, get out of here with that * * * before I call a cop!
Ooh, get out of here with that * * * before I call a cop!"

I turned around and got right out, a-running for my life.
And then I took it home with me to give it to my wife.
But this is what she hollered at me as I walked in the door:
"Ooh, get out of here with that * * * and don't come back no more!
Ooh, get out of here with that * * * and don't come back no more!"

I wandered all around the town until I chanced to meet
A hobo who was looking for a handout on the street.
He said he'd take 'most any old thing. He was a desperate man.
But when I showed him the * * *, he turned around and ran.
Ooh, when I showed him the * * *, he turned around and ran.

I wandered on for many years, a victim of my fate,
Until one day I came upon Saint Peter at the Gate.
And when I tried to take it inside, he told me where to go:
"Get out of here with that * * *, and take it down below!
Oh, get out of here with that * * *, and take it down below!"

The moral of this story is if you're out on the beach
And you should see a great big box and it's within your reach,
Don't ever stop and open it up. That's my advice to you.
'Cause you'll never get rid of the * * *, no matter what you do.
Oh, you'll never get rid of the * * *, no matter what you do.

Naw it was just a copy paste, I wasn't sure if anyone would know the song I was talking about otherwise.

I just had to quote Gerry O. from another thread and "second" this as a great song from the show!

How could I forget this one? I love the song "Quizas, Quizas, Quizas" that the Guadalajara Trio sing when the gang goes to Palm Springs. I think there are a couple of different shows on which they sing it.
