New Jello flavors!

Postby Melanie » Thu Jun 30, 2005 6:17 am

Wasn't sure which catgory this goes in--yesterday I found three

new Jello flavors--Pina Colada, Strawberry Daiquiri, and

Margarita. Think they would have had Don promote them

"back in the day"?

I doubt it since they are named for alcoholic beverages using booze stronger than beer or wine. Heck, I doubt if back then, just a few years after prohibition, they would have thought of naming anything like a Jell-o flavor after something alcoholic and then advertise it on a family show.

Have Phil do it!

Don could name the classic six flavors, and Phil could hawk the flavors just made for shooters (which is, I believe, the intended, if not stated market for the new flavors). Now, if we bust General Foods for marketing booze to kids with snazzy alcoholic Jigglers - will we get Benny scripts on Jellodocuments -dot- org?

Jello again......shooters

Postby Alan » Thu Jun 30, 2005 12:34 pm

A liitle while back, i recall some posts (tangentally) on the topic of the current relative rarity of jello. I still see the "section" at grocery stores, but nowadays, i almost never see it actually prepared, even tho it was fairly common when i was growing up in the 70's.

Shimp, now that you mention it, i agree that the intended market for these new flavors are shooters....i would guess that they are for what has become a major use for jello (maybe even most all for "college/young adult" age demographics?)

As to Maxwell's comment; were booze ads beyond wine and beer off-limits?

In the "what-if" realm, (even tho i believe there is validity to PCism of alcohol-isn't-a-joke ),i bet the JB gang would have made absolut(ely) hilarious ads out of these "flavors"!

While visiting my mom yesterday (age 86) she fixed lunch for us that included strawberry Jell-o with whipped cream for dessert. And of course we both said, "Jello-o again."

And the joke is on the consumer. Back in 1991, my roommate was already making those flavors, substituting 1 cup of each liquor for the two cups of cold water:

Pina colada: large box pineapple Jell-O, rum, coconut schnapps
Strawberry Daquiri: large box strawberry Jell-O, rum, some kind of schnapps
Margarita one small box lime Jell-O, one small box lemon Jell-O, tequila, and Cactus Juice schnapps

Uh huh...you know it. OK everyone, no Jell-O until you turn 21.

There's something a little sad about Jell-O shots, I love a good cocktail and I'm also down with Jell-O (the baroquer the better!), but the two don't mix IMO. It's like you don't want the booze OR the Jell-O, just the inebriation.

It reminds me of a great quote by that fine Texan Hank Hill, as he called out an awful Christian Rock performer, "You're not making Christianity better, you're making rock 'n' roll WORSE!"
