I heard that the price of stamps is going to 39

Postby Jack Benny » Sat Nov 05, 2005 7:30 am

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The cost of mailing a letter in the United States will rise two cents to 39 cents under a rate hike approved by the U.S. Postal Rate Commission on Tuesday.

Time for the "full-court-press," Laura! Jack needs to be on the 39 cent stamp!
Your pal,

If they really want Jack to look cheap they should just use the 29 cent stamp and cross out the 2 and put a 3 like I did!

Man, I wish somebody at the USPS would really have the nerve to do that! (It would save them the $$$ it would take to commission a new portrait, after all... ) Anybody who knows who Jack was would "get it," and as for those who wouldn't... WHO CARES?!?

Other options?

Postby LLeff » Wed Nov 09, 2005 2:15 pm

Say folks...

I've put out a few ways to get support going for the 39-cent stamp, and it's been very productive so far. I've gotten a few other thoughts on ways of approaching this campaign, like giving people a form letter to print out, sign, and mail to the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committtee. So if anyone has any other ideas for this campaign, let's hear them!

Jack Benny Stamp Limerick

Postby FRD » Wed Nov 09, 2005 5:21 pm

STATIONARY
If you think all the stamp hikes too many
And wish not to pay one more penny,
Then the man to enshrine
On the new Thirty-Nine
Is the comically constant Jack Benny.

How 'bout circulating a linked .gif of the 'Jack Benny' sig picture with the 2 crossed out - that links back to the petition page? I bet a lot of OTR- or nostalgia oriented websites would be willing to post that on their pages. Get it ALL over the web!

39 cent stamp

Postby scottp » Wed Nov 09, 2005 6:08 pm

But seriously...
it would be nice if at long last they would decide the AMOUNT of the increase in advance, and haggle later about the date it goes into effect. Then there would be enough lead time to avoid the No-Printed-Price "First Class Stamp" (K, L, M, whatever)-- and the "Makeup Stamp" without price would not be necessary-- just print up a bunch of 2 cent stamps.

My main concern with that is that I've already had a couple of people approach me with the basic attitude of, "Jack's already been on a stamp, so give up." I'm concerned that a broad distribution/reminder of the previous stamp might make more people say "been there, done that" without thinking about the 39 tie-in.

Hey, you don't get much of significance in this life without asking for it. And hopefully the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee has a sense of humor! :D

Oh, it could be any other clever banner 'ad' to post around. The main idea was to try and link other sites back to the petition and info about the campaign. I like ads that require a little investigation to figure out what they're about, which is why I thought the 'modified stamp' might be a good one. Maybe something you could click and hear Eddie Carrol saying "For two more cents it BETTER have a picture of me on it!"

I get what you're saying. If anyone has additional ideas on such a "clever banner ad", I'm open to hearing them!

Way cool! Dan's been really good to us over the years. There's also one on us in the Waukegan Times, at lakelandmedia.com (but I'm told their Web site doesn't get updated until Monday). And ya know what...you're looking at the thread he mentions about "It's time to start pressing"!

Great News!

Postby Maxwell » Sat Nov 26, 2005 2:16 pm

Chuck Schaden, during the first intermission of the replay of Jack in "The Man Who Came to Dinner," plugged the petition to have Jack's picture put on the 39-cent stamp. Here's hoping that Chicago gets out the vote!
